How to securely share files with anyone
Dropbox Transfer allows users to securely hand off large files or collections of files and confirm delivery to anyone even if they don't have a Dropbox account. This can be a great way to transfer a completed project, a marketing campaign, or even just a large number of files.
To get to Dropbox Transfer from your Dropbox account, click on the app button in the top right and select Transfer. This takes you to the managed transfer page where you can see all of your active and expired transfers and also create a new transfer. So let's go through that process.
Once I click create transfer, it takes me to this page where I can start adding my files into the transfer. Now there are a couple different ways to do that. The first is to select this plus button, which will allow me to pull in files from my local machine. This could be from my documents or desktop folders or my download folders and upload those directly into the transfer.
The other option is to pull in files directly from Dropbox. So if I select this Add from Dropbox button, I can navigate through my Dropbox itself and start adding files that I want in the transfer. So I'll select a few files here. And once I select choose, you can see they all three are added to this transfer.
Now I've got a few additional options here. I can rename this transfer. So let's go ahead and name that. I can add additional files, and I can even set some more advanced features like setting an expiration date on this transfer or setting a password on this transfer. In addition, we have an option to let you know when someone downloads this particular file.
Beyond that, we do offer some customization of these transfers. So if I select customized design, I have the option to change both the background and the logo of this Dropbox transfer. The great thing about this is you can have the transfer itself match your company's look and feel. So I'll go ahead and create a customized background and logo. You can select from any of the presets here or add your own background. I'm going to go ahead and just add a header background I have available. And I'll also upload my custom logo here as well. Now you can see the look and feel of this Dropbox transfer has changed significantly. The idea is we do want that to match your company's look and feel. So I'll save this transfer.
And now, now I can create the transfer itself. Once I do that, it's going to generate a link that I can send out to anyone who needs access to these particular files. Now it's important to note that this process actually creates a point-in-time copy of all of these files. So the recipient does not get access to the original files, nor can they see or access any updates made to those files after the transfer was created? That's even if those files live inside of Dropbox.
So let's take a look at what this looks like for the end user. I'm going to copy that transfer link, and then I will open it in an incognito window. When I paste that into my browser window, you'll see as the recipient, I can see all of the files that are in this request. I can see the custom background and logo. I can download these files individually or download them all as a bundle. So let me download those particular files.
And I'll go back to my manage transfer screen, and you'll see the status of that Dropbox transfer. So here you can see I've got the test transfer. It was sent today. There are three items, and it expires in six days. I've got one view and one download. And if I select this particular transfer, I can view and edit this information after that transfer has already been created. So I could update the expiration date or set a new password or even just copy this link again to be able to send out via an email or post it on your website.
